Day 2 LondonArrival in London, England. Uniformed Globus hosts are available to help you make the most of your stay.
Day 3 LondonLondon. Morning sightseeing with a professional London guide includes all the famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and the area’s splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, and Westminster Abbey. Highlights are a visit to ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if held. Time in the afternoon for independent activities. Day 4 AmsterdamLondon–Calais, France–Belgium–Amsterdam, Holland. Meet your tour director and traveling companions and depart London. Drive through Kent to the white cliffs of Dover and then enjoy an exciting Hoverspeed ride across the Channel to France. Travel through the Flanders region of Belgium on your way to Amsterdam, Holland’s 700–year–old capital. Tonight enjoy a welcome dinner at your hotel. (FB,D)
Day 5 AmsterdamAmsterdam. A local expert takes you first to the RIJKSMUSEUM where you admire Rembrandt’s masterpieces. Visit a major DIAMOND CENTER to appreciate how a rough mineral is transformed into a sparkling jewel. And to top it all, cruise aboard a glass–roofed launch through the canals of Holland’s Golden Age. The afternoon is at leisure, and an excursion to Volendam can be arranged. (BB)
Day 6RhinelandAmsterdam–Rhineland, Germany. A passing glance at the Dutch region best known as the locale of A Bridge Too Far on the way to Germany. During your early lunchtime break in Cologne visit the awesome twin–spired GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Then the afternoon’s highlight: a cruise on the romantic Rhine, past castle–crested cliffs, terraced vineyards, and trim, half–timbered towns. Day 7 LucerneRhineland–Lucerne, Switzerland. A scenic day! Morning in the lush valleys and pine–clad hills of the Black Forest, renowned for its cuckoo clocks. On the Swiss border take your pictures of the thundering RHINE FALLS, then continue to picture–book Lucerne. (BB,D)
Day 8InnsbruckLucerne–Liechtenstein–Innsbruck, Austria. Medieval heritage every step of the way as you discover the charm of this city on a walking tour with your tour director. Admire Thorwaldsen’s LION MONUMENT, the ornate patrician houses of the walled Old Town, and cross the famous covered WOODEN BRIDGE to the Jesuit church. Time afterwards to shop for Swiss watches or climb lofty Mount Pilatus. After lunch leave Switzerland to visit the pocket–sized principality of Liechtenstein, known for its fancy postage stamps. A short drive to Innsbruck in the Austrian Tyrol, then a stroll through quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian’s Golden Roof. (BB,D)
Day 9 VeniceInnsbruck–Venice, Italy . The spectacular Brenner Pass leads through the barrier of the Tyrolean Alps to Italy. Enter Venice in style as you glide by private boat along the Giudecca canal to meet your resident expert. Highlights of your walking tour are ST. MARK’S SQUARE and the BYZANTINE BASILICA with its 1,000–year–old gem–studded gold altar piece, the Clock Tower, lavish Doges’ Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Day 10 RomeVenice–Rome. A kaleidoscope of Italian landscapes parades past the coach windows on the way through the fertile plains of the mighty River Po and across the wooded Etruscan Apennine mountain range. Day 11 RomeRome. Sightseeing with your local guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Proceed across the Tiber for a stroll along the Via Sacra in the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in triumph, and finally visit the COLOSSEUM and hear about gladiatorial combats. Then time for independent activities and exciting optional excursion possibilities: Tivoli, and a country–style dinner at one of the local restaurants. (BB)
Day 12 TuscanyRome–Tuscany. An easy morning drive back north to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance. See the magnificent CATHEDRAL, Giotto’s Bell Tower, the Baptistry’s heavy bronze "Gate of Paradise," and sculpture–studded Signoria Square. To top it off, admire Michelangelo’s celebrated David in the ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS. Later take a moment to check out the enticing shops with Florentine leather goods and gold jewelry. (BB,D)
Day 13 NiceTuscany–Monaco–Nice, France. Focus on Pisa this morning for pictures of its amazing Leaning Tower. Then a scenic drive past a string of Italian and French Riviera resorts to the principality of Monaco. Here leave the highway for the panoramic Moyenne Corniche. Before arriving in Nice take a break in Eze to visit one of the PERFUME FACTORIES for which the area is famous. Optional outing is available to the Casino of Monte Carlo. (BB)
Day 14 LyonNice–Lyon. Through the sun–drenched landscapes of Van Gogh’s beloved Provence to Avignon, an important spiritual center in the Middle Ages and the residence of several Popes and antipopes. Take your pictures of the Gothic papal palace and the bridge of the popular song before proceeding through the orchards of the Rhône Valley to Lyon, the country’s second–largest city. (BB,D)
Day 15 ParisLyon–Paris. Follow the valley of the River Saône into Burgundy where road signs read like the wine list of an expensive restaurant on your way to Paris, the traditional climax of a European vacation. This afternoon, sightseeing with a local expert includes the most famous sights: the Opéra, Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, Arc de Triomphe and Champs–Elysées.
